PHOTOMEDICINE FOR MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS
Important Facts About LLLT / Cold Laser therapy

For Laser Therapy to work there must be adequate absorption of light in the cells at the site of injury.

How much is adequate ?

That depends if you want to stimulate or inhibit.

To stimulate you need between 5 and 50mW/cm2 at the target tissue depth, sustained for at least 20 seconds and ideally delivered at least once a week though daily is better. 100mW/cm2 on the surface at the site of injury is enough for most musculoskeletal injuries.

This same treatment works for inflammation too.

If you want to affect any hyperalgesic component of pain then you want to inhibit fast axonal flow in C-fibers and A-deltas.To do this you need a strong laser, 500mW/cm2 or greater.

However using strong lasers over sites of injury can slow healing so use the right probe for the desired effect.

One more thing, 100 mW/cm2 is not the same as 100mW.
